- JCCC Is a Twenty-Year Top Producer of Gilman Scholars
November 2, 2021
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College (JCCC) was recently identified by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as having produced a high number of Gilman Scholarship recipients over the past 20 years.
This achievement recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that have sent the most students to study abroad since the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program’s inception in 2001. JCCC ranks second out of two-year institutions around the country (see Gilman Top Producers).
“The Gilman Scholarship has enabled our institution to increase the diversity of our study abroad students across many demographics, in alignment with our strategic goal to build an inclusive and equitable campus culture, said Janette Jasperson, JCCC Coordinator of International Education. “Access to the Gilman Scholarship has given our students the courage to dream about studying abroad, something many of them might otherwise not have done. We are honored to be recognized as a Gilman Program Top Producer, but our biggest reward is seeing how the lives of our student recipients have been impacted by their experiences abroad.”
Throughout its history, the Gilman Scholarship program has made studying abroad more accessible and inclusive by providing scholarships to outstanding students who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise participate. More than 34,000 Gilman Scholars from across the U.S. have studied or interned in more than 155 countries around the globe.
As a recent Department of State and Department of Education Joint Statement of Principles in Support of International Education noted, “All Americans need to be equipped with global and cultural competencies to navigate the ever-changing landscapes of education, international business, scientific discovery and innovation, and the global economy.”
The Gilman Program is administered through JCCC’s International Education Office. Learn more about studying abroad and additional funding opportunities at jccc.edu/studyabroad.
