Get immediate, practical experience exclusively found at JCCC

Start at the beginning of floral arrangement to engaging customers and making the sale. In our JCCC greenhouse, you will learn to grow, care for and create your own stunning designs.

Diverse classroom learning experiences provide a well-rounded education in the business side of floral design. Form connections with local wholesale florists during experiential class trips. Apply the skills taught in the classroom in real-world scenarios, including creating arrangements for highly attended community events.

In two semesters, develop sought-after skills that translate into a variety of careers in floral design.

  • Create, arrange and stage designs for high profile events, weddings and corporate functions
  • Prepare large-scale floral designs within a budget
  • Manage your own small business, including finances and nurturing customer relationships
  • Work with a variety of materials, including popular dried and silk arrangements
  • Understand the principles of design, compositions, scale, proportion, balance, unity, harmony, rhythm and focal emphasis

Our comprehensive program prepares you for the varied career paths you can take in floral design. When you enroll in the Floral Design program, you’ll experience:

  • Stellar reputation: JCCC's Floral Design Certificate is the only one of its kind in the Kansas City area and the state of Kansas. You’ll receive a one-of-kind education that employers locally and regionally recognize and respect.
  • Expert faculty: Our floral design instructors have more than 30 years of combined experience in the industry. As a result, we’ve built lasting connections with local floral businesses, providing you with learning and networking opportunities.
  • Practical skills: Roll up your sleeves and work on designs for special events at JCCC, off-site special events, important holidays and on-campus flower sales. These experiences mean you’ll graduate with an impressive portfolio that showcases your work in various settings to potential clients and employers.
  • Multidisciplinary learning: Go beyond the basics of floral arrangement and learn to grow and care for the plants you’ll use in your designs. Gain a complete understanding of each flower as you grow plants in JCCC’s greenhouse, an opportunity no other regional program offers.
  • Outside involvement: Practice your entrepreneurial skills outside of the classroom. Join the Floral Design Club to gain experience in marketing, merchandising, buying and designing floral products.

Find your future in Floral Design

Floral design continues to be a multibillion-dollar industry, with arrangements and styles for every occasion. In 2020, the National Retail Federation estimated Americans spent $2.3 billion on Valentine’s Day flowers. In addition, the wedding industry, a major market for floral designers, reached a market size of $61.9 billion in 2022, according to a report by IBIS World.

With an ever-expanding industry, the only question is where you will choose to work! Floral design is a fun and flexible field. Demand continues to grow in retail and specialty event stores looking for creative and talented designers. Area business seek out JCCC graduates because they know students like you receive a hands-on education from industry professionals.

If a certain aspect of the industry interests you, take your JCCC education and start your own floral design business! Cater to weddings, corporate events or other special occasions where beautiful flowers can put a smile on someone’s face.

You can complete the Floral Design Certificate and join the workforce within a year. If you’d like to continue your studies, consider earning an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Interior Design. You can also transfer to a four-year school to pursue a degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture at Kansas State University.
