In accordance with Kansas Statutes 71-406 and 71-407, your residential address will be used when determining residency.
To Qualify for In-State (Johnson County or Out of County) Tuition
You are required to be a resident of Kansas for six consecutive months prior to the start of the semester in order to qualify for in-state tuition.
- Earning in-state tuition does not guarantee keeping it. Moving in or out of Kansas will affect your residency — potentially for the current semester.
- Living in a dormitory, fraternity, sorority, etc., in Kansas for six consecutive months prior to the start of the semester does not qualify you for in-state tuition.
- Students who cannot provide appropriate citizenship documentation or who are in the United States on a visa are not eligible for in-state tuition regardless of their current address.
- Veterans and dependents of veterans who move to Kansas can have the six-month residency requirement waived.
- Active Duty/Active Drilling service members and their dependents can receive a waiver of out-of-state tuition requirements regardless of where they live.
To Qualify for the Metro Rate
Students residing in zip codes starting with 640 or 641 in Missouri can qualify for a tuition rate lower than JCCC’s out-of-state tuition rate.
- Unlike in-state Kansas tuition, there is no minimum length of residency requirement.
- Students must supply a residential address to receive this rate. Students who supply a P.O. Box or who live in a dormitory, residence hall or fraternity or sorority house will be charged out of state tuition.
- Students who cannot provide appropriate citizenship documentation or who are in the United States on a visa are not eligible for this rate regardless of their current address.
Residency Determination
Your residency, which is used to determine your tuition, is based on the residential address provided via your application for admission, address change form, and information provided to us by the United States Postal Service.
If your residency is not correct at the time of admission or your residency changes, you are required to notify Admissions before the first day of the semester. Admissions reserves the right to change your initial residency based on further review of your application or other materials submitted to the department up to the first day of the semester.
Determination of residency is made in accordance with Kansas Statutes 71-406 and 71-407.
To Appeal Your Residency Status
To appeal your residency status, complete a residency appeal form (PDF) and return the form to the Admissions Office. Your address on the first day of the semester you are appealing will be considered in the appeal.
Appeal Deadline: You must turn in your appeal form no later than 20 days after the start of the fall or spring semester (10 days for the summer semester) in which you are challenging your residency status. Dates for each semester are listed on the academic calendar.
