Kansas State University is expanding its transfer team to enhance service to community college student populations across Kansas. With the addition of a new Transfer Navigator position, K-State will have a consistent presence on community college campuses and provide timely resources and services to students considering a future transfer. Transfer Navigators will serve as a transition coach and assist with the execution of strategic enrollment activities including, but not limited to, academic support and major exploration, how transfer coursework aligns with academic programs, and track students’ progression through challenges or barriers that could impede their college transition.

Partnership with Johnson County Community College allows opportunities for prospective transfer students to use this elevated resource. JCCC is the largest sender of transfer students to K-State, making the resource of a Transfer Navigator a natural fit.

Transfer Navigators will:

  • Serve prospective transfer students as their primary contact for all aspects of K-State
  • Help all student populations interested in transferring to K-State at any location or modality, including Manhattan, Olathe, Salina, and online learners
  • Act as a generalist to speak on all areas relating to a transition to K-State, including but not limited to admissions, course equivalency, academic advising, degree exploration, and financial aid
  • Encourage students for early planning for transfer to ensure a smooth transition
  • Assist faculty and staff with questions regarding course equivalency and be a catalyst for future partnerships
  • Host hospitality and information sessions for faculty, staff, and student populations about the transfer process and K-State
  • Maintain consistent and active presence within the JCCC community
  • Assist JCCC advising teams with the identification and filling of gaps in working with transfer students
  • Work with admitted eligible K-State transfer students to opt in to the reverse transfer program
  • Be a liaison for current K-State students looking for transferable coursework to take over summer sessions or intersessions

The K-State Transfer Navigator will have an office in JCCC’s Transfer Center, SC 262, on the College Boulevard campus. When not physically on campus, the Transfer Navigator will be visiting other community colleges in the area and will also be available through remote access.

Makenna Duncan has been selected to be JCCC’s first K-State Transfer Navigator. Makenna is a 2021 K-State graduate who studied Mass Communications and Journalism after transferring from Modesto Junior College in California. She previously served as the Coordinator for Special Populations Recruitment in the Office of Recruitment and Admissions at K-State. In this role, Makenna also served as K-State’s Manhattan campus representative to serve prospective JCCC transfer students.

Office hours:
9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays through July
To make an appointment with Makenna, call 913-469-3809, or drop by SC 262 during office hours.
Fall office hours will be announced later this summer.
