Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Chemistry

Class format

Face-to-face sections consist of lecture and demonstrations to help illustrate important concepts. I encourage students to actively participate in class. Students often work in pairs or small groups on problem-solving activities while I help and assist with clarification and understanding. Lab involves briefings and hands-on lab experiments.

Resource use

Lecture: A textbook is required and serves as an important resource for the student learning objectives. An on-line web learning system (OWL) is used for homework. An access code is required. Other required materials for lecture include a nonprogrammable calculator and three-ring binder.

Lab: A lab manual, nonprogrammable calculator, goggles and a lab coat are required.

Assessment

Lecture: There are generally four to five exams which are worth 60% of the grade. Quizzes and homework account for 10% each of the grade. The final comprehensive exam is worth 20%.

Lab: Labs are worth 50% of the grade. Quizzes are worth 30%, and a lab test is worth 20% of the grade.

Homework policy

Chemistry courses are generally homework intensive classes. Problems from each chapter in the book are assigned and collected. In addition, an online homework system (OWL) is used.

Attendance policy

For lecture, points are not awarded for attendance; however, missing class frequently can affect your grade.

Labs have mandatory attendance.

Availability

I am on campus five days a week and have an open door policy in addition to my office hours. I would be happy to schedule an appointment with you if you cannot attend during my office hours. I check email several times throughout the day.
