Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections – focus on a blend of learning (both theory and concepts) and working practice problems.  Pace is appropriate to complete the course material in a timely fashion, allowing for review time before exams whenever possible.

Online sections – focus on students using videos, online animations, and power points (both prepared by the professor and from other sources) for learning theory and concepts.  Deadlines are enforced in all classes.

Resource Use

Textbooks – not required in most courses, as students will have access to an e-textbook through the homework program.

Calculators – are used in every course except Math 111, where they are not allowed for the first half of the course.  Scientific calculators are recommended for Math 116 and below, with graphing calculators required for Math 165 and above.

Computer software – is used for homework and supplementary materials whenever available.  This may include web-based materials as well as JCCC-hosted content.

Online homework program – is always used for Math 171 and below, and is used for Math 231 as well.  (Please contact me if you need to know, as this may vary from year to year.)

Assessment

Homework usually comprises 15 – 20% of the total grade, with the rest coming from exams and/or quizzes.  The Final Exam percentage will replace earlier exams that are missed.

Homework Policy

Homework is required for all classes.  Late homework is penalized 40% for all questions completed after the due date.  Late homework must be completed by the last class period before the Final Exam.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required during the first two weeks (first week during summers) to satisfy JCCC attendance policies, and attendance can affect the learning process.  However, attendance does not add or subtract points from the class total.  Missed exams may only be made up with prior arrangement, and must be completed before the next class period.
