Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Physical Science

Class Format

Face-to-face sections of Physical Science 120 are integrated lectures and labs. Lectures are aligned to the course objectives, outline, and textbook and provide a fundamental introduction to the course topics. Lectures are followed by interactive problem solving and investigations. In class assignments are collaborative in nature to support a safe learning environment. There are weekly deadlines for any assignments that are not completed in class.

Online sections are asynchronous and independently completed. Lesson videos, textbook reading assignments, and online simulations are incorporated into the course to engage learners. Additionally, the course uses an online lab integration and a lab kit to support the hands-on lab component of the course.

Resource Use

Textbooks are required for both class formats and are a vital supplement to the lectures and activities. Students are assigned specific sections to read and review. The textbook is a useful resource for completing homework assignments. The textbook is a critical resource for exam review.

Canvas is an integral part of the course and regular interactions are expected for both class formats. Additional resources are provided for each unit and are delivered to students on Canvas. The Canvas Inbox is an effective way for students to ask questions and receive support.

Assessment

Students are assessed on a weighted system. The typical semester for both class sections include:

  • 15% - Homework & In Class (or online) Activities
  • 20% - Labs
  • 15% - Quizzes
  • 40% - Unit Exams
  • 10% - Final Exam

Homework Policy

Homework is assigned with each unit and due dates are set weekly. Homework is assigned in class and on Canvas. Late homework is generally not accepted unless arrangements are made prior to the due date.

Face-to-Face section students who will be absent from class may submit homework via email or Canvas by the due date and time.

Attendance Policy

Consistent attendance is important to maintain a higher grade in this course. Students are expected to arrive on time and engage in class activities and labs. Labs, quizzes, or exams missed due to absences cannot be made up without prior notification to the instructor. Additional documentation may be requested if arrangements are requested.
